Thoughts on World Mental Health Day

On World Mental Health Day, which falls this year on 10th October, we are reminded of something simple but profound: none of us is meant to walk through life alone.

At Being Alongside, we cherish the power of friendship, compassion and listening. Sometimes what a person needs most is not an answer, but someone willing to sit beside them, hear their story and remind them that they are seen, valued and not forgotten.

We believe in the generosity of human connection — in reaching out, sharing what we have, and recognising that our wellbeing is woven into something larger than ourselves. We are part of families, communities, nature and creation; part of a whole in which each of us matters.

And we hold on to hope: hope in one another, hope in the possibility of healing and hope in the providence of God. Healing is not always immediate or complete, but body, mind and spirit can be nurtured, strengthened and renewed through love, friendship, faith and care.

So today, we celebrate everyone who walks alongside another — the friend who listens, the volunteer who gives their time, the person who notices someone struggling, and the one who simply stays.

Because sometimes, being alongside is itself a gift of healing.

With gratitude to all who share in the Being Alongside journey.
